If you have to explain it, you need to rewrite it.

The color coding is a nice touch.

Maybe that previous work was in the cafeteria.

When I read this recap of a TV show, I had to check to see who wrote it, because I thought it might have been from a reader, an amateur wordsmith, and in that case, I would be kind and not name names. But this is a professional writer. “… Associate Television Editor at the Huffington Post. She previously worked at Seventeen Magazine and with Hearst Digital Teen Network. Her work has been featured on The New York Times’ Local East Village blog, Billboard.com and Spin.com.” So Crystal Bell, I have to call you out on this.

There was a suicide attempt in this episode and Crystal wrote that some viewers thought it unrealistic “for him to try and kill himself.” But wait, it was a suicide ATTEMPT. Did he try to kill himself? Yes. Did he try and kill himself? No.

That was annoying, but Crystal continued and wrote this grammatical impossibility:
I truly thought that Karofsky was going to try and kill himself again.” How can he kill himself again when he never killed himself in the first place?

Did Crystal try to fail at writing grammatically? No. Did Crystal try and fail to write grammatically? Indeed.

Accidental Coinage

From an op-ed piece on American childbirth practices;

Too many women end up having an appeasiotomy.

I’m guessing that’s the surgery you  have to placate the doctor.

The Eight by Katherine Neville

I wanted to like this book. As I began, I felt the book could have used some editing, too many repeated phrases, too many unnecessary details (why did she put the dog in the sink?) After about 300 pages the lack of editing and the unbelievable coincidences became annoying, but I continued to read it, thinking there would be a payoff at the end. There was not. I never did figure out what “The Eight” was, and the breathless sex scenes and characters forever burying their faces in each other’s hair, shoulders, neck, etc. was intolerable. The plot had promise, but the execution was very flawed. A good editor could have cut this book in half and made it better.

Doves?

Now I must ask, what kind of birds does the author think are in cuckoo clocks?
